Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who consigns?

A: Basically it is anyone who wants to sell their expensive clothing, housewares and furniture in a "no hassle" way. If you've ever had a garage sale, you know they can be a real feeding frenzy of crazed people wanting something for nothing and the weather can be frustrating as well. Our merchandise and furniture usually comes from:

  • "Empty nesters" or anyone else who is downsizing and moving to a smaller home.
  • Home decorators and remodelers - those folks who have bought new furniture and want to recoup some of the costs of their quality furniture pieces which do not fit with the new decor.
  • Estates - It's time to find a home for a family member's belongings but those responsible don't want to have strangers coming into the home or don't have time to deal with details of a garage sale.

Q: What is a consignment?

A: It is when we are agents for the sale of your clothing, home furnishings and furniture. You own them until the sale is made. We have a contract that spells everything out clearly so you'll know just what to expect from us and what you can expect to pay in sales commissions. Please click here to see a copy of our current contract.

Q: How do I consign?

A: If you want to sell used clothing or housewares, you can bring them to the side entrance at Crazy Mountain Consignment on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. If you want to sell furniture, call us and schedule a visit when we can come see the furniture. We don't have enough staff to do this for small items, but if you have large pieces, we will try to accommodate your needs.

Q: What happens if my items don't sell?

A: Items that are desirable and priced right sell at our high traffic location. It is extremely rare for quality furniture not to sell - usually within the first thirty days - often within the first week. Should your item not sell within a 90 day exposure at our showroom, you may reclaim your item or donate it to a charity. Keep in mind that items remain on the floor and are available for sale until you retrieve them. We will arrange delivery of your unsold items to one of our local thrift stores and get you a tax receipt for the donation. Items not claimed within 7 days after the end of the contract will be considered abandoned and become the property of CMC.

Q: I want to consign some furniture with you? How do I do that?

A: We appreciate advance notice of your intent to consign furniture with us. If you are not sure if your items will sell at our store, someone will be glad to travel to the site of the furniture and let you know before bringing it in. Our showroom and storage area only have so much space and we like to make sure we have room for your items.

When both you and the store agree to sell your items at Crazy Mountain Consignment, we both sign an agreement that spells out how long we'll sell it, how much we'll sell it for and how much we will charge for consigning it. There's more information on this on our Contract page.

Q: How do you set the price?

A: We'll agree on the price before we offer it for sale. In general, highest quality furniture sells for 40% to 50% of what it did when new depending on condition and demand for that particular item. However, we are unable to tell you a price of your furniture until we physically inspect it.

Priced too high, the article won't sell. Priced too low, it is unfair to the consignor. Using the information that you supply about the items you wish to sell (such as original cost, history, last cleaning or reupholstering, overall condition) and merging that with our experience, we feel we can obtain the best return for your merchandise.

Q: Do you pick up and deliver?

We prefer that you find a way to bring your furniture in or take it home as the case may be. If there is no way to do that, we will arange pick or deliver within the city limits. Please call with any questions regarding pick up and delivery. We're glad to answer your questions.

Q: Is there any kind of furniture you don't sell?

We sell almost every kind of furniture as long as there is a demand for that style. Contemporary furniture in very good condition is always in demand! Antique furniture in good condition is welcome as well. We do not sell metal desks, waterbeds, exercise equipment, appliances, computers or electronics. We do reserve the right not to take certain furniture which experience has shown us does not sell.

Q: Do you repair furniture?

A: No, we don't. It is up to the consignor to make sure that furniture is in saleable condition when it is brought in to our showroom, i.e. clean, free of odors, spilling, stains, holes, and with no broken parts. If we discover that furniture must be repaired or cleaned after you have brought it in, those costs will be deducted from your profits.

Q: What do you sell besides clothing and furniture?

A: We sell any attractive piece that would fit in a home such as area rugs, lamps and home accent pieces. We also sell complete, gently used sets of dishes (no chips please), pottery, and many other home decor items.

We don't sell electronics, appliances, pianos or organs, plastic lawn furniture, grills, window treatments, or miscellaneous dishes.

Q: What are your consignment procedures for clothes?

A:Clothing and houseware consignments are taken at the south entrance on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon until 6 p.m.

Q: What kind of clothing sells best?

A: Clothes sell best when they are in style and in season. If you bought it within the last couple years, it is a good bet. Try to time it according to season and bring it in early for the best results.

Q: How do I maximize my profits on my consigned clothing?

A:First make sure everything is clean and pressed and neatly hung on hangers. We will gladly give you your hangers back or trade you for some of ours. It is always a good idea to freshly launder your items and look for stains, holes or pilling before you bring them in. The better your items look the better they will sell!

Crazy Mountain Consignment will gladly discuss the price you would like on your clothing, however, we ultimately are the ones who set the price. Generally we price at 1/3 of the original price of the clothing. If we don't think we can sell your item in our store for the price you would like, we will gladly give you suggestions of other ways you could market them elsewhere. Items that do not sell are periodically marked down, 25% after 30 days, 50% after 60 days. This will help move them (which is what you want to accomplish!). If an item sells for under $100, you will receive 40% of the selling price.

Items that are not sold or picked up after 90 days become property of the store and/or will be donated to charity
